How Do I Match RAM Speed to My Computer?
Refer to the specification sheet for your computer.
To start shopping be sure you have the right size memory. Most often rack systems use DIMM and compact rugged computers use SODIMM.
The specification for RAM speed is a product of the CPU and mother board which controls the number of connections (lanes) that can be used for RAM. This rating will be expressed as DDR. Most often and recently DDR4 and DDR5 are the most popular. (memory for a GPU is different and denoted by GDDR)
Once you have a match for the memory size and type, you can consider speed. Your product will have a maximum speed rating for the GPU/motherboard measured in GB (gigabytes). You can select memory that operates below the computer rating, and it will operate at the RAM rated speed. If you insert memory that is above the maximum specified memory, operation will be limited to the maximum rating in the specifications table.
You might want to insert higher speed memory even if even if there is benefit of speed. At certain times as technology advances, older products become rarer and therefore more expensive. Have a look at the price of higher speed memory to meet the maximum of your computer more economically.
