Securing Connections
Ethernet
Many industrial computers have a small screw receptor near the port. When paired with the appropriate cable with “screw lock” the connection will be secure from vibration and gentle tugs. For greater protection, consider a computer with locking M12 ports (sometimes waterproof). When used with an M12 to Ethernet cable, a vibration proof connection is made on the computer side.
USB
USB cables naturally stay put due to the friction designed into the cable end. They are susceptible to vibration and gentle tugs for disconnection. Some computers have screw holes for screw lock USB cables which prevent vibration disconnection. Other cables have a spring “tooth’ that adds friction to the connection. This design is not well received.
FAKRA
These connectors make a click connection with plastic collars. They are automotive standard and considered free from vibration and moderate tugs for disconnection. CoastIPC has found that FAKRA can be well trusted for high vibration connections, however under the stress of repeated connection-reconnection while testing cameras, the plastic can break. When making final build connections, consider using fresh cables.
