What is Machine Vision?

Machine vision is an advanced technology that enables devices, usually equipped with cameras and specialized software, to interpret and understand visual information from the environment. Compared to human vision, machine recognition systems analyze images and extract meaningful information to make appropriate decisions or trigger specific actions. This framework uses various techniques such as image processing, pattern recognition, and deep learning algorithms to identify objects, measure their properties, and evaluate locations in their environment. Machine vision applications are deployed in many industries including manufacturing, robotics, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and quality control.

Machine vision plays a key role in developing quality control techniques in manufacturing. By testing products for defects, accuracy, and durability, detection systems ensure products meet specific specifications. This increases productivity and reduces human error. In robotics, sensors enable robots to sense their surroundings, allowing them to navigate and interact with objects independently. This technology has also revolutionized the automotive industry with the introduction of self-driving cars that sense traffic, pedestrians, and road conditions. As machine vision continues to evolve, its ability to quickly analyze and interpret visual data holds the promise of transforming industries that previously relied on human intuition to deliver accurate, efficient insights.
