Intel Addresses Raptor Lake Chip Failures

After months of addressing stability issues, Intel has identified the root cause behind the failures in its Raptor Lake CPUs and is rolling out a new fix. Although the 0x129 microcode update released in August was meant to resolve the problem, it didn’t fully address the underlying cause.

Intel is introducing the 0x12B microcode update for affected 13th and 14th Gen CPUs, which directly tackles the root issue. This fix targets elevated voltage requests by the processor during idle or light activity, traced to a specific clock tree circuit within the IA core. The issue stems from a part of the CPU that manages performance (P) and efficiency (E) cores.

The problem, known as a Vmin issue, occurs when voltage spikes cause the minimum operating voltage to rise over time, gradually degrading the chip’s stability. Intel has pinpointed four main contributors to this issue: motherboards drawing more power than Intel recommends, an algorithm that allows i9 CPUs to run at high performance even at elevated temperatures, high voltage demands from the processor, and a microcode and BIOS behavior that increases core voltage requests during idle or light activity. Intel is working with partners to roll out the necessary BIOS updates, and motherboard manufacturers are expected to release these fixes soon.

While early testing shows no performance loss from the update, Intel notes that system performance can vary depending on configuration and other factors. This fix could have significant implications for companies operating in the industrial computing space.
