Frequently Asked Questions
The AIMB-786 uses an LGA1151 socket and supports 8th/9th generation Intel Core i7/i5/i3 and Pentium/Celeron processors with the Intel Q370 chipset. Listed CPU options range from the 2-core Celeron G4900 (2.9 GHz) up to the 8-core Core i7-9700E (2.6 GHz), with TDPs from 35 W to 65 W.
Note: Intel 8th/9th generation processors only support Windows 10 (64-bit).
The board has four 288-pin DIMM sockets supporting Dual Channel Non-ECC DDR4 2400/2666 memory, up to a maximum capacity of 128 GB.
The board supports triple display via VGA (up to 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz), DVI-D (up to 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz), and DisplayPort (up to 4096 x 2304 @ 60 Hz). Graphics are handled by the integrated Intel HD Graphics controller with up to 1 GB shared VRAM when 2 GB or more of system memory is installed.
The board provides 5 SATA 3.0 channels with a maximum data transfer rate of 600 MB/s, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10.
Rear I/O includes 8 USB ports: 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2, 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1, and 4 x USB 2.0. Additional internal headers provide 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1, 2 x USB 2.0, and 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A connector.
The board provides 1 rear RS-232 port and 5 internal serial connectors: 4 x RS-232 and 1 x RS-232/422/485.
The board requires +12V, +5V, +3.3V, +5Vsb, -12V, and -5V rails. Measured current draw at power-on (with an Intel Core i7-8700 3.2 GHz and DDR4 2400 16 GB x4) was 3.77A on +12V, 1.77A on +5V, 2.8A on +3.3V, 0.1A on +5Vsb, 0.04A on -12V, and 0.06A on -5V.
Operating temperature is 0 ~ 60 °C (32 ~ 140 °F), depending on CPU speed and system thermal solution. Non-operating storage temperature is -40 ~ 85 °C (-40 ~ 185 °F). Humidity tolerance is 40 °C @ 95% RH and 60 °C @ 95% RH, both non-condensing. The board is an ATX form factor measuring 304.8 x 244 mm (12" x 9.6").
Yes, the AIMB-786 supports Intel vPro, AMT, and TPM technologies. A TPM module (Advantech part PCA-TPM-00B1E) is required to enable vPro and TPM functionality.
No. The AIMB-786 is not compatible with 1U chassis. It is designed for use with 2U/4U chassis or wallmount enclosures, and requires Advantech's proprietary CPU cooler; other brands' CPU coolers are not compatible.
How-to Guides
- Select a riser card compatible with your chassis and expansion needs: AIMB-R430P-03A2E (2U riser with 3 PCI slots), AIMB-R431F-21A1E (2U riser with 1 PCIex16 & 1 PCIex1), AIMB-R43PF-21A1E (2U riser with 1 PCIex16 & 2 PCI), or AIMB-R4301-03A1E (2U riser with 1 PCIex1).
- Confirm the target chassis is 2U or 4U — the AIMB-786 is not compatible with 1U chassis.
- Install the riser card into the board's PCIe/PCI expansion slot as specified by the riser card documentation.
- Purchase and obtain the PCA-TPM-00B1E TPM 2.0 module, which is required to enable Intel vPro and TPM technologies on the AIMB-786.
- Install the TPM module onto the corresponding onboard header.
- Configure vPro/TPM settings in BIOS as needed for your deployment.
- Select the appropriate Advantech CPU cooler based on your CPU's TDP: part 1960052651N021 for CPU TDP ≤65W, or part 1960047669N001 for CPU TDP of 95W, both designed for 2U, 4U, and wallmount chassis.
- Install the selected Advantech cooler onto the LGA1151 socket CPU.
- Do not substitute other brands' CPU coolers — Advantech notes that other brands are not compatible with the AIMB-786.
- Obtain the optional PS/2 KB/Mouse cable (part 1700019268-11), as it is required to use the PS/2 KB/Mouse header — it is not included by default.
- Optionally use the IO bracket for PS/2 KB/Mouse cable (part 1960063434N000) for chassis mounting.
- Connect the cable to the onboard PS/2 KB/Mouse header (1 connector available).
