Frequently Asked Questions

What CPUs does the Nuvo-5000E/P Series support?

Nuvo-5000E/P models use an LGA1151 socket and support 6th-Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3, Pentium, and Celeron processors, ranging from the Celeron G3900 up to the Core i7-6700. Both standard (up to 65W TDP) and low-power TE variants (35W TDP) are supported.

What I/O ports are available on the Nuvo-5000E/P Series?

The Nuvo-5000E/P provides:

  • 2x Gigabit Ethernet ports (Nuvo-5002E/P) or 6x Gigabit Ethernet ports (Nuvo-5006E/P), via Intel I219-LM and I210-IT controllers
  • 1x stacked VGA + DVI-D connector and 2x DisplayPort connectors (supporting 4K2K resolution)
  • 4x USB 3.0 ports and 4x USB 2.0 ports
  • 3 serial ports: COM1 and COM3 are software-configurable RS-232/422/485, COM2 is RS-232 only
  • 1x Mic-in and 1x Speaker-out audio jacks
What are the power input requirements and consumption for the Nuvo-5000E/P?

The system accepts 8~35V DC input via a 3-pin pluggable terminal block. Maximum power consumption depends on installed CPU: 49.2W (2.05A@24V) with a Core i7-6700TE, 47.8W (1.99A@24V) with a Core i5-6500TE, or 39.4W (1.64A@24V) with a Core i3-6100TE.

What is the operating temperature range and what certifications does the Nuvo-5000E/P have?

With 35W TDP CPUs (TE series or Pentium G4400TE), the system operates from -25°C to 70°C. With 65W/51W TDP CPUs, it operates -25°C to 70°C if configured in 35W CPU mode in BIOS, or -25°C to 50°C in full 65W/51W CPU mode. Storage temperature is -40°C to 85°C. The system is CE/FCC Class A certified according to EN 55022 & EN 55024, and also complies with EN 50155:2007.

How much memory and storage does the Nuvo-5000E/P support?

The system has two DDR4 SODIMM sockets supporting up to 32GB total (using two 16GB DDR4-2133 modules). For storage, it provides 2x Gen3 6Gb/s SATA ports for 2.5" HDD/SSD (supporting RAID 0/1) and 1x full-size mSATA port that shares a socket with mini-PCIe #1.

Does the Nuvo-5000E/P support wireless or cellular connectivity?

Yes. The system has two mini-PCIe sockets that can accept WIFI, 3G/4G, or other mini-PCIe modules. The first socket also doubles as an mSATA slot, and the second works with a panel-accessible SIM socket. Multiple SMA antenna apertures are provided on the front and back panels for multi-antenna configurations.

What is the difference between the Nuvo-5000E and Nuvo-5000P models?

The E and P designations refer to the expansion Cassette type. Nuvo-5002E/5006E include a Cassette with a PCIe x16 slot (running 8-lane Gen3 signals), while Nuvo-5002P/5006P include a Cassette with a 32-bit/33MHz PCI slot instead.

What operating systems and drivers are supported?

Tested operating systems include Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit, Windows 8.1 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit, OpenSUSE 42.1, Fedora 23, Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS/16.04 LTS, and Debian 8.3. A "Drivers & Utilities DVD" includes a One-Click driver installation utility for Windows. Note that Windows 7 requires manual xHCI driver injection for USB keyboard/mouse support during installation.

What are the mounting options and dimensions of the Nuvo-5000E/P?

The Nuvo-5000E/P Series measures 240 mm (W) x 225 mm (D) x 90 mm (H) and weighs 4.4 kg. It supports wall-mounting (standard, using included brackets) or optional DIN-rail mounting.

What MezIO expansion modules are compatible with the Nuvo-5000E/P?

The Nuvo-5000E/P supports the following MezIO modules: MezIO-C180-50 and MezIO-C181-50 (8-port RS-232/422/485), MezIO-D220-50 and MezIO-D230-50 (isolated digital I/O), MezIO-G4P (PoE+ ports, requires a PoE-capable system), MezIO-G4 (GigE ports), and MezIO-U4-50 (USB 3.0 ports). MezIO-V20 ignition control is supported on Nuvo-5000LP but not listed as compatible with the Nuvo-5000E/P (the MezIO-V20-EP variant applies instead).

How-to Guides

Install a DDR4 SODIMM Module
  1. Disassemble the Nuvo-5000E/P chassis by removing the Cassette, front/back panel hex bolts, and bottom cover to expose the PCBA.
  2. Tilt the SODIMM module and insert it into the SODIMM socket.
  3. Press it down firmly until the clamps of the socket snap into the latching position of the SODIMM module.
  4. Repeat to install a second DDR4 SODIMM module if desired. Up to 32GB total is supported using two 16GB modules.
Install a 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD
  1. Put the Nuvo-5000E/P controller upside down and use a Philips screwdriver to loosen three M3 flat-head screws to remove the trapdoor from the bottom cover.
  2. Remove protective films from the HDD thermal pad (from the accessory box) and place it on the center of the HDD bracket.
  3. Place the HDD/SSD into the bracket in the correct orientation, push down to contact the thermal pad, and secure it with M3 flat-head screws.
  4. Pull out the SATA cable inside the chassis and connect it to the HDD/SSD.
  5. Place the HDD/bracket assembly back into the bottom cover and fix it with three M3 flat-head screws.
Install a Mini-PCIe Module (e.g., 3G/4G)
  1. Disassemble the Nuvo-5000 controller to expose the mini-PCIe sockets on the PCBA.
  2. Tilt the mini-PCIe module and insert it into the mini-PCIe #2 socket (used with the panel-accessible SIM socket), then fix it with one M2.5 P-head screw.
  3. Attach the IPEX-to-SMA cable to the module.
  4. Fix the SMA connector of the cable to one of the antenna apertures on the front or back panel.
  5. Reassemble the front panel, back panel, and bottom cover, then attach the antenna to the SMA connector.
  6. Insert a SIM card upside down into the SIM socket to enable 3G/4G communication.
Connect DC Power to the System
  1. Make sure the external DC power supply is powered off or disconnected before wiring.
  2. Get the 3-pin pluggable terminal block from the accessory box (fits 12~24 AWG wires).
  3. Identify the positive and negative contacts of your DC power supply and the terminal block; polarities must match positive-to-positive and ground-to-ground.
  4. Insert the wires into the correct contacts and tighten the clamping screws with a Philips screwdriver.
  5. Plug the terminal block into the receptacle on the rear panel and tighten the captive screws with a slotted screwdriver.

Caution: The Nuvo-5000E/P accepts 8~35 VDC. Supplying a voltage over 35V or incorrect polarity will damage the system.

Mount the System on a Wall or DIN Rail
  1. For wall mounting: get two wall-mounting brackets and four M4 screws from the accessory box, fix the brackets to the system, then place the system on a flat surface and fix it with screws (or use the keyhole-shaped holes to suspend it).
  2. For DIN-rail mounting (optional kit): fix the DIN-rail mounting clip to the bracket using four M4 flat-head screws, then fix the bracket assembly to the system with another four M4 screws.
  3. Mount the system in the correct orientation for best heat dissipation efficiency.
