Frequently Asked Questions

What I/O ports does the NRU-52S/NRU-52S+ provide?

The front panel includes a 3-pin terminal block for DC/ignition input, a Micro SIM slot, a MicroSD slot (reserved for ODM use with Xavier NX), 1x DisplayPort (up to 3840x2160 @ 60Hz), 2x USB 3.1/3.2 Gen1 ports (shared bandwidth with the internal M.2 B key), 1x CAN bus port, 1x micro-USB port (reflash only), and 1x hardware-configurable RS-232/422/485 COM port. The rear panel has 4x Gigabit PoE++ ports, a DIO & GPS PPS port, and a chassis grounding point.

What power does each PoE++ port supply?

The system's 4x Gigabit Ethernet ports comply with IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ Type 3 and Type 4 PSE, with each port able to deliver up to 90W to a connected powered device (PD). The ports are also backward compatible with 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3af (PoE) devices. The total PoE++ power budget is 144W.

What is the DC input voltage range and how is it wired?

The system accepts 8V to 35V DC input through a 3-pin pluggable terminal block (V+/GND/IGN). The same terminal block also carries the ignition (IGN) signal for vehicle-based ignition power control. Supplying more than 35V will damage the system.

What is the operating temperature range and what certifications does the system carry?

The NRU-52S/NRU-52S+ operates from -25°C to 70°C with passive cooling (15W TDP mode with 50W PoE++ power supply), or -25°C to 70°C with the optional fan kit (15W TDP mode with 144W PoE++ power supply). Storage temperature is -40°C to 85°C, humidity tolerance is 10% to 90% non-condensing. It is certified to MIL-STD-810H (vibration Method 514.8 Category 4, shock Method 516.8 Procedure I), CE/FCC Class A per EN 55032 & EN 55035, and EN 50121-3 (EN 50155:2017, Clause 13.4.8).

What storage and memory options are available?

The Orin NX-based NRU-52S+ offers 8GB or 16GB LPDDR5 memory on the SOM with no onboard eMMC. The Xavier NX-based NRU-52S offers 8GB or 16GB LPDDR4x memory and includes 16GB eMMC 5.1 on the SOM. Additional NVMe storage can be added via the mini-PCIe socket (with adapter for M.2 M 2242 NVMe on NRU-52S+, or directly for WiFi/NVMe on NRU-52S).

What expansion slots are available for wireless, GNSS, or storage modules?

The system has two full-size mini-PCIe sockets: one for M.2 M 2242 NVMe storage (via adapter) or WiFi/NVMe, and a second for GNSS, V2X, or CAN modules. There is also one M.2 3042/3052 B key socket (USB 3.1 Gen1 + USB 2.0) for a 4G/5G mobile module, supporting dual SIM (one front-accessible, one internal). A total of five antenna holes are provided for mobile broadband and wireless modules.

What OS/software does the NRU-52S come with?

The system is bundled with the latest version of NVIDIA JetPack. Note that NVIDIA's OTA update mechanism has been found to potentially damage the boot loader; Neousys recommends running sudo apt-mark hold nvidia-l4t-bootloader before any software or system update.

What are the physical dimensions and weight of the system?

The NRU-52S/NRU-52S+ measures 173 mm (W) x 144 mm (D) x 60 mm (H) and weighs 1.4 kg. An optional wall-mount bracket is available for mounting.

What isolated DIO and GPS PPS capability does the system have?

The rear DIO & GPS PPS port provides 1x GPS PPS input, 3-channel isolated digital input, and 4-channel isolated digital output. The DO is open-drain, with an external power source recommended between 5V and 24V. DI treats 0-1.5V as logic 0 and 5-24V (or up to 40V per the quick installation guide) as logic 1.

What does the CAN bus port support?

The system includes 1x isolated CAN bus port on a DB9 connector, compatible with both industrial and in-vehicle applications, supporting CAN2.0A and CAN2.0B at up to 1Mbps.

How-to Guides

Install an M.2 B Key 4G/5G Module and SIM Card
  1. Disassemble the system enclosure by removing the six screws on the bottom panel and lifting it open.
  2. Locate the M.2 B key slot (blue rectangle) and the internal SIM slot (red rectangle), or use the front-panel SIM slot.
  3. Insert the M.2 2242/3042/3052 module at a 45-degree angle and secure it with a screw, using the provided copper standoff at the appropriate mounting hole for the module size.
  4. Slide open the Micro SIM cover, place the SIM card into position, then slide the cover closed to lock it in place.
  5. Clip the IPEX-to-SMA cable onto the module and secure the antenna connector to a side panel antenna aperture.
  6. Remove the protective film from the thermal pad on the inside of the bottom panel corresponding to the M.2 module.
  7. Reinstall the enclosure, panel, and external antenna.
Install a mini-PCIe Module (WiFi, GNSS, NVMe, CAN)
  1. Disassemble the system enclosure.
  2. Insert the gold-finger end of the mini-PCIe card at a 45-degree angle into one of the two mini-PCIe slots on the main board.
  3. Gently push the other end of the card down onto the motherboard and secure it with a screw.
  4. If the module requires wireless connectivity, clip the IPEX-to-SMA cable onto the module and secure the antenna connector to a side panel antenna aperture.
  5. Remove the protective film from the thermal pad on the inside of the bottom panel corresponding to the mini-PCIe module.
  6. Reinstall the enclosure.
Wire the Ignition Signal for In-Vehicle Power Control
  1. Connect the vehicle battery + line (12V for sedan, 24V for bus/truck) to the V+ terminal on the 3-pin pluggable terminal block.
  2. Connect the vehicle battery -/GND line to the GND terminal.
  3. Connect the vehicle ACC (accessory) line to the IGN terminal.
  4. Confirm the DC power source and IGN signal share the same ground before applying power. The IGN input accepts 8~35VDC; do not exceed 35VDC.
  5. Use the rotary switch (accessible after removing the bottom panel) to select the desired ignition operation mode (0-15) for power-on/power-off delay behavior.
Install the Optional Wall Mount Kit
  1. Remove the four rubber stands from the bottom of the enclosure.
  2. Take the two wall mount brackets and four M4 screws from the accessory box, and fix the brackets to the system enclosure using the M4 screws.
  3. Place the system on a flat wall surface and secure it with four M4 screws.
Install the Optional Fan Kit
  1. Disassemble the system enclosure.
  2. From inside the enclosure, remove the cover for the fan's 4-pin power connector.
  3. Reinstall the enclosure.
  4. Place the fan kit on top of the enclosure, secure the two hex screws on the 4-pin connector panel, and plug in the 4-pin power connector.
  5. Take the cable cover from the accessory box and secure it over the 4-pin power cable using the provided screws.
  6. Secure the two hex screws on the other side panel to complete installation.
