Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PB-2580J-SA and what does it do?

The PB-2580J-SA is a standalone, supercapacitor-based power backup module that protects a connected box-PC against power outages. It uses Neousys' patented CAP energy management technology to automatically manage system boot and shutdown without requiring additional drivers or software, and it can operate in harsh environments from -25 to 65°C.

What is the energy storage capacity and supercapacitor composition of the PB-2580J-SA?

The PB-2580J-SA is composed of eight 100F, 2.7V supercapacitors and stores 2500 watt-seconds of energy. The expected supercapacitor lifespan is over 10 years, with a cycle life of 500,000 charging/discharging cycles.

What DC power input does the PB-2580J-SA accept?

It accepts a wide DC input range of 12 to 35 VDC via a 3-pin pluggable terminal block. This same terminal block can also accept an ignition (IGN) signal input when the module is configured in Ignition Control Mode or Ignition Relay Mode for in-vehicle applications.

What is the maximum output power of the PB-2580J-SA?

The PB-2580J-SA supplies a maximum output power of 70W to the back-end system. Output voltage during discharge is 12V or 24V, depending on input voltage: if input voltage is 17V or higher, output during discharge is 24V; if input voltage is lower than 17V, output during discharge is 12V.

What is the operating temperature range and what certifications does the PB-2580J-SA have?

The PB-2580J-SA operates from -25°C to 65°C and has a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C (with reduced energy capacity at the extremes). It is rated for vibration and shock per IEC61373:2010, Category 1, Class B (body mounted, part of EN50155), and carries EN50155:2007 certification along with CE/FCC Class A compliance per EN55032 and EN55035.

What I/O interfaces does the PB-2580J-SA have?

It has one DB9 port for 3-wire RS-232 communication with the host computer, and one 10-pin pluggable terminal block for isolated digital I/O, consisting of a PWR_BTN# output signal pair (to control the back-end system's power) and an optional SYS_STAT input signal pair (to detect back-end system status).

What operating modes does the PB-2580J-SA support?

The PB-2580J-SA supports Normal Backup Mode, Ignition Control Mode, and Ignition Relay Mode. It does not support Daisy Chain mode, which is available only on the PB-9250J-SA.

Does the PB-2580J-SA support daisy chain connection to extend backup capacity?

No. Daisy chain connection to extend energy capacity is only supported on the PB-9250J-SA, not on the PB-2580J-SA.

Does the PB-2580J-SA have a selectable charging current switch?

No. The 5A/10A charging current selector switch found on the main panel of other models in the series is not applicable to the PB-2580J-SA.

What are the dimensions and mounting options for the PB-2580J-SA?

The PB-2580J-SA measures 32.8mm (W) x 176.6mm (H) x 126mm (D) and weighs 0.93 Kg. It supports DIN-rail mounting or optional wall-mounting.

How-to Guides

Wire DC power input and output for Normal Backup Mode
  1. Connect the DC output from your power supply to the DC IN 3-pin pluggable terminal block on the PB-2580J-SA using the screw clamping mechanism.
  2. Connect the DC OUT 3-pin pluggable terminal block of the PB-2580J-SA to the power input of the back-end system.
  3. Connect the PWRBTN# signal pair to the remote power button control connector on the back-end system.
  4. Apply power. The module begins charging automatically; once fully charged it will initiate the power button signal to turn on the back-end system.
Configure Windows to shut down properly on power button press
  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options on the back-end Windows system.
  2. Locate the setting labeled When I press the power button.
  3. Change the setting from the default sleep (S3) behavior to Shut down.
  4. Save the change. This ensures the PB standalone module's power button signal is recognized as a full shutdown command rather than a sleep command.
Connect the Power Backup Parameter Configurer utility over RS-232
  1. Connect the PB-2580J-SA's DB9 COM port to the host computer using the supplied DB9-to-DB9 cable.
  2. Ensure the host computer's COM port is configured to operate in RS-232 mode.
  3. Run Neousys_PB_Configurer.exe, which by default communicates via COM 1.
  4. If connecting to a different COM port (e.g., COM3), open an administrative command prompt, navigate to the folder containing the configurer executable, and run it with the port number as an argument, e.g. PB_Configurer.J25.19.exe com3.
  5. If parameters do not update automatically, click Get Parameters in the utility to refresh the readings.
Manually reset the PB-2580J-SA
  1. Locate the recessed reset button on the side panel behind the panel opening.
  2. Insert a pin into the opening to press the button.
  3. Hold for 5 seconds until one long beep is heard.
  4. The module will reset and load its default system configuration.
Update Power Backup Parameter Configurer settings
  1. Adjust the desired parameters (e.g., shutdown behavior, voltage limits, operation mode) in the configurer utility.
  2. Click the Update Parameters button.
  3. Click Yes on the confirmation dialogue; the PB standalone module will automatically shut down the connected system.
  4. Wait 1-3 seconds for the module to automatically restart.
  5. The new settings take effect after restart.

The PB series is a standalone power backup module that can protect your box-PC against power outages. Utilizing state-of-the-art supercapacitor technology, it can operate in harsh environments from -25°C to 65°C and have extremely high durability lasting over 10 years.
