Looking at the Latest Edge AI and Machine Vision Advancements from Advantech

As industrial applications such as machine vision, video analytics, and robotics — including autonomous mobile robots and automated guided vehicles — continue to evolve, the vendor community continues to innovate and push product capabilities forward. For data-intensive applications at the edge, including edge AI, CoastIPC partner Advantech has released several new powerful products, including server-grade motherboards and an industrial PC based on the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orion AI computer.

Powered by NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin

With the MIC-733-AO, Advantech offers a powerful industrial PC based on NVIDIA’s Jetson AGX Orin. Capable of up to 275 trillion operations per seconds (TOPS), the PC targets AI applications in manufacturing, smart cities, and smart agriculture. With the new Jetson AGX Orin modules, the system supports 4x the CUDA cores and 8x the performance of the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier series, along with multiple sensors and the latest high-speed interfaces. The PC also features four GigE ports, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, two mini PCIe slots, and two M.2 slots. Additionally, it offers iDoor and iModule expansion and support for diverse peripherals, according to Advantech.

Not long before releasing the MIC-733-AO, Advantech launched the AIR-030 edge AI system, also powered by NVIDIA’s Jetson AGX Orion. This system offers up to 275 TOPS, multiple I/O options, and expansion support. Targeting edge AI inference applications, the AIR-030 also delivers 8x the performance of the previous generation of Jetson AGX Xavier–based models while supporting NVIDIA JetPack 5.0 and up, as well as the NVIDIA Isaac robotics platform, which according to Advantech reduces the time and cost of production AI development.

Pushing Processing Power Forward

Advantech has remained busy over the past few months, releasing several other products designed to push edge AI and industrial automation capabilities forward. Introductions include several new motherboards, including the AIMB-592, a MicroATX form factor board based on AMD EPYC™ 7003 series processors, with 4x steel PCIe 4.0 x16 slots that support GPU extension. Launched in February, the motherboard supports up to 64 CPU cores and 768 GB of memory (via 6 DDR4 RDIMM slots) and provides intelligent remote management services via M.2 M-Key and IPMI 2.0.

Previously, the company announced 10 new motherboards, servers, and network platforms based on 4th Gen Intel Xeon scalable processors, designed to help equipment vendors, service providers, and enterprises accelerate edge industrial, communications, and IoT applications. Among the new additions are four motherboards and a server designed to enable next generation machine vision, deep learning, and video analytics applications for industrial, medical, and IoT markets. These five devices support PCIe 5.0 and feature built-in acceleration from Intel Deep Learning Boost. The company’s new Advanced Matrix Extensions (Intel AMX) improve upon AI inference capabilities compared previous models. >>>Learn about other new motherboards here.

Advancements on and off the Factory Floor

Designed for machine vision applications, Advantech’s new MIO-5377 single-board computer (SBC) features the latest 12th and 13th Gen Intel Core processors. The 3.5-inch SBC leverages Intel’s latest heterogeneous computing design and offers up to 14 cores/20 threads. It is the first 3.5-inch board to support DDR5 4800 MHz up to 64 GB and to feature 5G/Wi-Fi 6 readiness. The board offers up to 40 Gbps bandwidth, allowing it to connect a GPU, a VPU, and high-resolution 4K cameras at the same time.

Venturing off the factory floor, the new ITA-260 edge device targets intelligent transportation applications such as video surveillance, traffic management, and electricity monitoring for railroads and roads. The device features USB, LAN, HDMI, COM, and wireless connectivity for multiple data streams in real time. Two of its six LAN ports are designed for IEEE 802.11AS time-sensitive networking. Another two ports support fiber optic communication for real-time, long-distance data transmission from the edge to the cloud. With this technology, according to Advantech, traffic control centers and railway operators can obtain diagnostic data and perform predictive maintenance and remote management, reducing management costs and enabling higher overall quality of transportation.

Innovating With Intel

Right after the new year, Advantech announced several upgrades and new product launches based on 13th Gen Intel Core processors. The ASMB-588, ASMB-788, and ASMB-610V3 motherboards, along with the FWA-3034 network appliance, now feature more cores, threads, and cache, and faster memory, for compute-intensive edge use cases. The new motherboards target machine vision and industrial automation applications and support the latest DDR5 ECC/non-ECC UDIMMs, with up to 128 GB PCIe slots for expansion. The FWA-3034, meanwhile, targets network equipment vendors and communication service providers and upgrades throughput of software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) and next generation security applications.

Advantech has also introduced new edge computers and embedded boards with 13th Gen Intel Core processors. They include the EI-53, ARK-2251, and DS-086 edge computers, the SOM-6884 COM Express module, and the MIO-5377R SBC. Targeting areas such as autonomous mobile robots/automated guided vehicles, edge AI, medical, retail, and smart factories, these new devices offer end users high CPU performance, multiple I/O options, and power efficiency.

Lastly, the company announced a wave of upgrades to a range of its products, including industrial ATX motherboards, PICMG 1.3 full-size SBCs, and industrial PCs, which now feature 13th Gen Intel Core processors. Targeting applications including machine vision, industrial automation, and intelligent transportation, the new devices feature the i9/i7/i5/i3 processors with up to 24 cores and 32 threads, which significantly boosts computing performance according to Advantech.
