More Pins, More Power? Intel Unveils the LGA 1851 CPU Socket

Intel has unveiled its latest CPU socket, the LGA 1851, set to accommodate the upcoming Arrow Lake processors. This announcement, however, came with a twist. The socket will primarily cater to the embedded sector, despite being touted as the successor to the LGA 1700 socket, which has served since the 12th Generation of Core CPUs.

At the Embedded World conference in Germany, Intel showcased its new embedded Meteor Lake platform alongside the LGA 1851 processor socket. While the platform is designed for space-restricted embedded applications, the new socket caught the attention of enthusiasts. Sporting the same dimensions as its predecessor but housing an additional 151 pins, the LGA 1851 marks a significant shift.

These extra pins are speculated to cater to future needs, potentially accommodating more PCI Express lanes. While Intel's current 14th Gen Core CPUs offer impressive PCIe connectivity, the new socket hints at enhanced flexibility for future upgrades.

Interestingly, AMD's AM5 socket follows a similar design ethos, albeit with fewer pins. The discrepancy in PCIe lane count between AMD and Intel raises questions about the intended use of the additional pins in the LGA 1851 socket. With Intel transitioning to DDR5 memory exclusively, speculation suggests that some of these pins might serve power and grounding purposes.

However, with increased pin density comes the risk of mishandling during installation. PC builders may need to exercise extra caution to avoid damaging the delicate pins. Despite this, the continuity in socket size offers some reassurance, allowing compatibility with existing coolers for Arrow Lake processors.

As the tech community eagerly anticipates the full rollout of LGA 1851 motherboards, only time will reveal the true implications of Intel's latest socket innovation.
